Hi Good post. Coulpe of days back I got the same issue. Application Failed to Initialize: 0x800106ba. It is related to windows defender. But, unfortunately all the fix is manual.
Which means, everytime teh computer reboots we have to manually start the windows defender. After troubleshoot more than 2 hours, i found a simple fix. The fix is true only if following conditions are true. 1: Application fails to initialize: 0x800106ba pops up on every restart. 2: u can start the windows defender after successfully starting the WINDEFEND service i.e. Net Start Windefend in command prompt window. Fix: By Default, The startup type 'Windefend' service is is manual.
Just Make it Automatic, and restart the computer. Bingo, taht should do the trick. Regards Ramesh V.
Then locate WD and double click it, select 'startup type' as automatic, then click 'log on' tab, click 'Local System account' and check the only check box available. Click the 'recovery' tab and make sure WD tries atleast two time to start, you can understand from the information you see there. Now, click the 'General' Tab and clikc 'start' Close the window. Now locate the file Windows Defender in Control Panel and double click it. It should start now!
Regards Wajih Islamabad, Pakistan Hello Wajih, This solution worked for me, thanks! Regards, xslikx. Dear Wajih, You made my day. This fixed my Vista trouble with the Windows Defender 0x800106ba. I thought I knew a bit about the computer, but this trouble humbled me.
I would have never thought to look in the Administrative Tools. Thank you so much. I think it's interesting and maybe a bit troubling in my mind why this fix isn't listed in the Knowledge Base, that is unless of course I did something wrong. All that's in there is Windows XP, not Vista. Yours truly, Tommy German Nolensville, Tennessee, United States of America. Still not working for me. When i start the service i get the error: 0x80092003 Anyone who has the solution for my problem?
Microsoft Security Essentials
I still don't get why microsoft still does nothing about this problem. When i read forums on the internet searching for an answer for the problem, i found that a lot of people with vista has this problem but microsoft only gives a solution for XP. I think that they don't even know what to do or they are just thinking about money and new clients and not thinking about there clients they have.:(. Tommy German said: Dear Wajih, You made my day. Yours truly, Tommy German Nolensville, Tennessee, United States of America you're welcome, don't be surprised for the late reply! Hi, I'm running vista business 32 bit. In my case defender got broken by uninstalling forefront security client. The errors are caused by missing registry keys and files in%programData% Microsoft windows defender. I have fixed it by doing the following: Backup from another vista with defender running. Backup these registry keys: HKEYLOCALMACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services WinDefend HKEYLOCALMACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Defender Then copy to local drive in the broken vista all files in%programData% microsoft windows defender.
Once copied replaced them to%programData% microsoft windows defender in the broken vista (do it like this as the process requires elevation and hence you will not be able to copy from a network location). The files there should be something like 34MB. I'm pasting the registry backup for reference, but if the files in%programData% are missing (the definition updates) defender won't work.
If you accidentally removed the executables from%programFiles% copy them to the correct folder and then use regsvr32 to register them all. If the files are there you don't need to do this.
Good luck, Mariano. Then locate WD and double click it, select 'startup type' as automatic, then click 'log on' tab, click 'Local System account' and check the only check box available. I had the same problem 0x800106ba with Vista64 bit. After I search for answer I combined two people’s suggestions and got the following solution. Click start 2. Type Run MsConfig 3. On the System Config Window Click on the Services Tag 4.
Click on the 'hide all Services' option. Click on the Start Up Tab at the top. Scroll down to the Windows Defender box and Uncheck it. Go back to the Services Tab and Uncheck 'hide all '. Click on Apply, and OK. Restart Computer Step 2: 1 Go to control Panel and click on Administrative tools. 2 Click on services and a new windows will appear.
3 Look up for windows defender and right click on it, click on properties and select automatic, it should be on manual, change it to automatic and click apply then o.k. And will take you back to the services windows. 4 Windows Defender should be highlighted and on the left hand side of the services windows, should be 2 links, click restart. Click start 2. Type Run MsConfig 3.
On the System Config Window Click on the Services Tag 4. Click on the 'hide all Services' option. Click on the Start Up Tab at the top. Scroll down to the Windows Defender box and check it.
Go back to the Services Tab and Uncheck 'hide all '. Click on Apply, and OK. Restart Computer Those three steps should fix 0x800106ba with Vista64. Error: 'The window defender services on local computer started and then stopped.

Open main Windows Update console Click on 'Installed Updates' (on the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom) Remove 'Update for Microsoft Windows KB931099' Reboot the computer twice Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same update, by clicking on the Check for Updates button.
Please let us know. Thanks Ramesh Asari.

Hi Catherine, you said. I don't see any WD tab in my administrative tools- services. What should I do?
Yes, I've the same problem here due to putting the Admin tools into my own folders, if you can get to Computer Management - you can get to Services; try to run mmc.exe - ie type mmc into the search bar at the Start button. Alternatively go into the path; 'C: Windows winsxs' and search the snapins from the subfolders there for files named.msc;; there's dozens of them there including perfmon.msc and services.msc taskschd.msc secpol.msc etc. Once found - right click on them and run them as Administrator. Regards, pkn2011. Hi WajihUllahBaig, you said. Your best chance would be to search for its exe in windows folders.
Ahh, I see now my last message was both overkill and doesn't answer the question either. 8-) So some other possibly more helpful points now follow: Check processes running from task Manager for the file MSASCui.exe (defender Interface) on the path 'C: Program Files Windows Defender MSASCui.exe' If it's running go to that path and create a shortcut for defender from it. If it's NOT running - go to the same path and both create shortcut and also Run the shortcut/or the MSASCui.exe Regards, pkn2011. Hi Ramesh, you said. 'MSE disables Windows Defender upon installation' Well I'd have to disagree with this statement. MSE and defender are really one in the same.
Defender is the front end - and handles some of the background activities, while MSE contains the Defender processes and more. The defender EXE - MSASCUI.exe you can see from the letters is Microsoft's Advanced Security Centre User Interface - or thereabouts; you can't have one without the other IMO - in either Vista or in Win7 etc. And Wajih, please - how many thank you messages for thank yous can be left for you to write?;-) Thanks to ALL collectively. Regards, pkn If my post was helpful - give it a Vote. If it helps solve your problem - propose it as Answer.;-). I have tried everything I can think of & nearly everything everyone has posted & I still can't get windows defender to work. This is slowly driving me insane!!! I've changed all the settings that people have recommended & still it won't turn on.
Keeps telling me it started but then stopped. I tried Wajih suggestion too & was hoping against hope that it would work, but to no avail. I keep getting the windows defender error 0x800106ba as well.
Can someone please find me a solution. I am running Microsoft Security Essentials too.Windows Defender should work as well but isn't!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!
