Check out the new. Has anyone been able to make this work? I used to play FFXI heavily back in 2007 to about 2010 and every now and again I resub just to relive some nostalgia and progress the story/see what's new.

Right now it's free to play so I thought I'd hop back into Vana'diel for the weekend and maybe resub again after that. New laptop (got it in Dec), never installed FFXI on here before, so I got the ultimate collection, found my POL user/pass and installed.

Grabbed the Windower because all of my macros were calls to txt files to swap equipment/perform the actions/whatever and found those too (had them saved on a DVD I burned). Everything installed right (despite taking ages) and got the windower 4 set up with a few minor plugins (IME and Infobar basically). Went to log into the game and it crashes when it switches from POL to FFXI. It doesn't matter what I do, what I enable/disable, etc.
It never goes beyond that point. I can't downgrade to Win 7 like I'm sure someone will probably tell me (and it wouldn't matter if I did, since Microsoft is pushing really hard to get everyone upgraded to Win 10; it's only a matter of time before it's mandatory and you can't stop it). I've already tried disabling the antivirus without success. I even re-installed POL standalone to make sure there wasn't some weird bug with it in the complete collection edition.
No dice so far. I've been at it since 8 am (it's now 3:10 pm) and I'm at the point where I have no further ideas and am just praying that someone here on Reddit has a solution for this.Edit- Here's my computer's specs: Intel i5-5300HQ @ 2.30Ghz, 8GB of RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 8GB of video memory and driver version 361.75 installed.Edit 2- It works! The problem appears to be the resolution.
Changed the resolution of Windower to 1280x720 (as opposed to the 1024x768 default) and it worked. Ah so playing it directly is good.
I suggest you play around with Windower's resolution. I know for sure if windower resolution does not match yours or if its not within compatibility range it will crash Windower when you load FFXI. I know laptop resolution is more picky compare to a PC Monitor or TV. I also know Laptop resolution might be max at 1380x768? I have my Windower set on this setting on PC and Laptop and runs well This happens a lot on my regular PC because I had Windower at 1024x768 or default resolution and my resolution is 1940x1080 or something and windower hated it badly where it won't load to FFXI from POL. I had this same problem with windows 10, and I've done a couple things and the game works fine, though I'm not sure if it effected it or if it was just coinsidence:.
Did not run FFXI config and set default settings before using windower - pol crashed everytime I tried windower. Eventually I went in and configured ffxi config and ran the game without windower to test. Changed from borderless to windowed, borderless kept crashing on my laptop - but was fine on my desktop. Changed resolution to 1400x900 - Had it at 1920x1080 and it kept crashing.
Those were literally the only things I messed with and the game works fine with windower. I also didn't mess with a ton of defaults like bump maps and etc. I've got a few addons and plugins install and they all work fine.
