Two years ago I bought an Asus laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed. I also received a recovery DVD with it. I now want to reinstall Windows and fully format the hard drive - however, the sticker with the Windows product key under the laptop is unreadable. I tried recovering the key with ProduKey and similar software but they show another product key - it is different from the sticker's key (I checked on another Asus laptop and on my Dell laptop). Is it possible to reinstall the operating system with the product key obtained from ProduKey? If not, how can I retrieve the product key?

It sounds like you've already read the key using some similar software though. The reason why your keys are different is a fundamental difference between how OEM activation works and how normal activation works. When you get Windows pre-installed on your PC, it comes with special OEM activation files, which tell Windows to check for a certain code on the motherboard of the computer. If that code exists, then Windows knows that the computer was manufactured by that OEM, and verifies it against the activation file. If they match, then activation proceeds automatically. For these types of installations, one product key is used by essentially all of the computers that manufacturer installs that version of Windows on. The key on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop is essentially inactive, although it can be used if you lose the recovery media.
If you have the original recovery media, you can just install Windows with it, and it should automatically activate, as long as the recovery media is from that computer manufacturer. Windows should activate automatically when it connects to the internet. Do keep a record of the key you sniffed though, just in case activation fails.
You can always call Microsoft to get free help with activation, if it does not work automatically. The trial version can decode the keys for all Microsoft products and (with the trial you can't export the output, but copy and paste still works). I'm trying to install Vista on a laptop. I obviously have the key from the bottom of the laptop. I have installed a Home Premium using a downloaded OEM Disk.
When I try to activate this copy, I comes back with an error. Firstly I get; The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you type is invalid for activation. Then I look at the existing key product key, its an OEM key that looks like it was installed during installation, even though when installing Vista I entered the product key from the bottom of the laptop when it asked. Then I go to change and enter my key, a valid key, via the 'Try a different product key' option. After that, it tries to validate then comes back with an error: Code: 0xC004E003 Description: The software licensing service reported that license evaluation failed. Is this a disk issue, do I have the wrong disk for the CD key? I have never had this issue before.
Its a valid Windows Home Premium disk, I have a valid key (bottom of the laptop) but it still does not work. Also, there is not Activate By Phone option. Only contact MS, which brings up a help applet. The error you are stating comes back as Key is in use. It's not a wrong cd type problem.

This is the worst time I have ever had with a laptop - this is a joke. Can someone please tell me why; That does not work. I do not have a repair me link when hitting F8. I cannot hit 0 and bring up the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from the recovery partition - even though the recovery partition is fine. I hit 0 and nothing happens.
I have no repair options, anywhere yet I still have the recovery partition. What use is it if I cannot bloody access it. What can I do? Been on this for hours now, its getting annoying. Unless you use ILLEGAL methods to bypass Microsoft's Anti-Piracy protection, you will continue to be frustrated by your attempts to use anything other than the proper recovery media to fix your issue.
Laptop manufacturers, more often than not, leave the creation of these 'Recovery Discs' up to the end user of their computers to save money. (Theirs, not yours).
Using ANYTHING but these 'Recovery Discs' or the 'Recovery Discs' you now have to order from Toshiba (because none were created by whomever originally bought the laptop) will fail to make the laptop function as it should especially when pressing keys to start recovery features is concerned and more importantly when authenticating the O.S. Licensing data is commonly encoded directly into the BIOS firmware of the computer and must match with the recovery media of the manufacturer. This is why your 'key' (which isn't the same as the information on the C.O.A sticker on the bottom of the laptop) didn't work. One common and unique key is commonly used to activate the license on thousands of a particular O.S.
On different models of any particular manufacturers laptops. If you use a 'Dell' disc to install the O.S. On a non Dell laptop, you should not be surprised if it fails to activate the license because the data in the BIOS will not match the hidden info installed on the hard drive by the Dell disc.
A Recovery Disc that you can download does NOT have any files on it that can actually re-install the O.S. It is only a Disc used for repairing a corrupted start up situation and basic utilities to repair start up functionality. It will not help you if you need to re-install, or if your hard drive is damaged. It is simply not designed for that purpose. Save yourself a lot of grief and get Recovery Discs from Toshiba.
You will have to supply them with very specific information so they can send you the right Discs. If possible, (your laptop must be able to support it) get an upgraded version of Discs to install Win 7 through Toshiba, (its a much better O.S. Hello guys - thanks for all the information here. This is the result of my endeavors. I use a program called Advisor - basically scans the node for all hardware and software showing install updates etc, as well as CD keys for each bit of software; including the OS. I give these out to each client - just so they have a list of the CD keys for each bit of software included - plus they normally lose the CD keys, which makes it hard for me to install legal copies.
Well, the key I was using, from the Advisor application didn't work - as you can see from my posts above. Well, upon inspecting the back of the laptop (this is at 2am by this time, I have stinging eyes and rapidly decreasing patients!) I notice that the CD key on the back of the laptop did not match that given by the Advisor - which I had been cutting and pasting into the validation box. So, I enter in this key (from the sticker on the back of the laptop) and bang 'Activated'. Now, this was not the end of the issue. Where I had been entering in the key from the Advisor software, there was no option to 'Activate in a different way' option - there was no way to call MS and get a new key.
After entering in the CD key on the back of the laptop, like I previously mentioned, I got an 'activated' as opposed to a 'Cannot activate this key.' After the OS has been activated I got message down the bottom right saying 'This is not a valid copy of Windows'. But, I entered in slmgr 4 and the phone activation wizard started - whereas it was not available before - obviously because the OS was not activated. Even so, this was now activated but with the 'This is not a valid copy'. So, I basically follow the steps and got a new OS key. So I could use a non specific OEM copy of Vista (not from Toshiba) with the CD key on the back of the laptop.
Overall, what did I learn. Always, always use the factory default HD recovery option - never,never install a different OEM version because its quicker.
