Program Description As a resident in Mayo Clinic's five-year Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program, you will acquire the skills necessary for diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases of the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems. You will complete 24 months of core surgery and vascular rotations during the first three years. The remaining years are focused on vascular surgery training. You will participate in and perform a large volume of open vascular surgery operations. In addition, you will perform endovascular procedures — including complex peripheral and fenestrated aortic procedures — and gain comprehensive training in Mayo Clinic's noninvasive vascular laboratory and ultrasound areas. There are more than 1,600 open and 500 endovascular operations performed each year at Mayo Clinic by vascular surgeons.

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery has a large aortic aneurysm practice (250-300 cases per year), of which 50 to 60 percent are repaired with endovascular-stent devices in the thoracic or abdominal aorta, including the use of branched and fenestrated grafts. The division participates in many clinical trials, including fenestrated endograft trials.

There is also a carotid artery stent program at Mayo Clinic. This clinical practice provides an excellent basis for teaching. As a vascular surgery resident, you will participate in all aspects of patient care both in and out of the operating room. The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery expects residents to operate independently in the latter portion of the training program. In addition to its broad clinical practice, the Mayo Clinic has a state-of-the-art simulation center with open and endovascular training models for resident use to improve technical skills and competence in patient management.

Fortunately, Mayo Clinic has a large volume of both open and endovascular cases to provide adequate clinical exposure without overlap of senior resident and fellow responsibilities. Accreditation and Certification This five-year vascular surgery residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and leads to certification in vascular surgery.

Program History The Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program at Mayo Clinic will accept its first resident in 2012. It is anticipated that one resident will complete training in the program each year.

In 2006, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved the Primary Certificate in Vascular Surgery which eliminates the requirement for certification in general surgery prior to certification in vascular surgery. This creates more than one training pathway. This new certification program translates to more training options; there will be more time available for training in areas such as non-operative prevention, diagnosis, and management of vascular disease; shorter training periods; and more freedom of choice concerning when to enter vascular surgery 0+5 track Vascular surgery integrated track for trainees who match during medical school.
